September is one of my favorite months for so many reasons but mainly three: fall, festivities, and of course fashion.
Â
People are back from holiday, ready to party, and celebrate the harvest season. What better way to ceremonialize all of the above than with fashion! Even though the shows last just one week in New York, for me the anticipation and excitement spans a full 30 days across three time zones. I LOVE IT.
Fashion Week has been a part of my life since I was 16 years old. I used to stay up way past midnight watching all the runway shows, obsessed with the fantasy of transporting myself to the exciting new place of a given designers' discretion, where time freezes and whatever you see becomes your momentary reality. As I've gotten older my obsession with fashion has remained the same (maybe more), yet time and time again my eyes always hone in on one common theme: flowers.
Minimal, ornate, cosmic, or abstract- florals always circulate the runway. The more I pay attention, the more I notice designers mimicking the seasons of nature, each in their own genius way. I guess there's a reason they call it full circle. #itsplantporn
THE WINNER:ROSIE ASSOULIN
I'M SUPER OBSESSED WITH ROSIE ASSOULIN, JUST LIKE EVERY OTHER FEMALE WALKING DOWN THE STREET- WITH REASON! THIS SEASON, HER PLAY WITH PROPORTION AND VOLUME WITH A PSYCHADELIC COOL FLORAL PRINT IS FRESHER THAN FRUIT OFF A TREE. COMBINED WITH A BACKDROP OF PALMS AND ( BIODEGRADABLE!) PACKING PEANUTS: AWESOME.
BEST SET DESIGN: ULLA JOHNSON
ULLA JOHNSON HAS AN APPROACHABLE ROMANTICISM THAT MAKES HER DESIGNS WEARABLE AND COOL. THIS COLLECTION WAS ANCHORED BY A GORGEOUS BACKDROP OF WILDFLOWER AND GRASSES BY FLORAL POWERHOUSE SAIPUA- MY FAVORITE EXPERIENCE OF NYFW.

HONORABLE MENTION: JASON WU
THE WINNER: PREEN BY THORNTON BREGAZZI
PREEN BY THORNTON BREGAZZI HAS SOMETHING SO BRITISH HERITAGE ABOUT IT BUT THIS SEASON IT CAME OUT WITH AN EDGE. VAL GARLAND SLAYED THE MAKEUP SITUATION, INDIVIDUALLY PLACING HAND PICKED FLOWERS ON THE MODELS' FACES AND BODIES CREATING A 90S GOTH MEETS FAIRY NYMPH VIBE THAT I feel BIZARRELY close to.

HONORABLE MENTION: SIMONE ROCHA

THE WINNER: DOLCE AND GABBANA
MILAN FASHION WEEK DOESN'T EXIST WITHOUT A STANDOUT SHOW FROM DOLCE AND GABBANA. THE THEME OF SPRING/SUMMER 17 WAS TROPICO- ITALIAN TROPICO THAT IS. WITH AN ITALIAN HOLIDAY AS THEIR GUIDE, D AND G HIT ALL THE HIGH NOTES OF BOTANICAL DELIGHT.
THE WINNER: MIU MIU
MIU MIU TOOK ME TO A PLACE OF 1960S LIGHT-AND-AIRY (MUCH NEEDED!) WITH THEIR HAPPY DAISY PRINTS. THE MODELS ADORNED IN FLOWERY SWIM CAPS REMINDED ME OF THE CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW IN LONDON FROM TWO YEARS AGO, WHERE SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMERS OPENED THE ESTEEMED FESTIVITIES.
